Dr. Dharitri Misra is a Lead consultant at Aquilent, Inc and joined the Digital Preservation Research program at the Lister Hill Center in 2001. Her work involves evaluating new technologies and standards being made available for preservation and access of digital information, and applying them to develop infrastructures to help preserve NLM’s digital collections on medical informatics. Prior to that, she worked on a number of spacecraft command and communications related projects at NASA, both as a technical lead and as a system architect. Dharitri Misra received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of Maryland.


Current Projects

System for Preservation of Electronic Resources (SPER): This is an OAIS-compliant, Java-based software R&D system to demonstrate end-to-end preservation of NLM’s digital collections in a cost-effective way, with focus on automated metadata extraction (AME) and bulk file migration. At present, SPER is being used operationally to archive and made accessible to general public a collection of FDA released monthly publications under NLM’s possession, which contain synopses of 65,000 Notice of Judgments (NJs) against food and drug adulteration and misbranding by various agencies. SPER automatically extracts metadata for these NJs from their scanned pages by plugging-in AME tools developed at CEB. It uses the open-source DSpace archiving system (developed by MIT/HP), with necessary customization, to archive and index the contents of the NJs, which may then be searched and accessed publicly via Internet Web browsers.
