Mike Bopf is Senior Software Engineer with Aquilent. He is currently responsible for maintaining and enhancing the WebMIRS (Web-based Medical Information Retrieval System) research tool at the National Library of Medicine.

Mike joined Aquilent in 1998 and worked in the NASA division before coming to NLM. His previous experience includes working in software development for Raytheon Systems Corp. and Hughes Electronics, mostly in the NASA domain.

He holds B.S degree in Computer Science/Mathematics from Valparaiso Universtiy and an M.S degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California.

Current Projects

Web-based Medical Information Retrieval System (WebMIRS): Web-based Medical Information Retrieval System (WebMIRS) provides a graphical interface to the NHANES II & II database of medical survey data and x-ray images. It is implemented as a Java application that accesses the database using the internet. WebMIRS seeks to address a number of critical issues surrounding biomedical data such as use of multimedia, wide-area access, efficient data transmission, and capability to export results to other software applications.

Multimedia Database Tool (MDT): Multimedia Database Tool (MDT) is the next generation of WebMIRS. One of the primary goals of the MDT is to provide a layer of abstraction between the application and the medical dataset so that it can handle a wide range of data and images. Using this layer of abstraction shifts the maintenance from the programmer to a database administrator, since only data tables will need to be modified in order for the MDT to ingest and provide access to another dataset. The initial dataset being used during the development of the MDT is a uterine cervix cancer dataset provided by National Cancer Institute.
