1. Notice Page

When you first launch the application, a Notice page will appear. Please read through the text. You can scroll up/down the text by swiping with you finger, and select the 'Continue' button.

An email message will be generated that will send a confirmation message to the application support staff. Please select 'Send' to confirm and send this message.

The Notice is also available from the 'About' page of the app.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has in its mission the development and coordination of communication technology to improve the delivery of health services. This app is designed to ease uploading personal information about missing people to (http://archive.nlm.nih.gov/lpf). This service is being provided for the explicit purpose of assisting in locating victims of the Earthquake in Haiti (2010) and studying the utility of such tools in responding to disasters. Submission of information using this app is voluntary. All submitted information will be made publicly available. Data stored using this tool may not be moderated and will be searchable by all visitors to the "Earthquake in Haiti-People Locator" (EHPL) Web site (http://pl.nlm.nih.gov). Note that the sender's personal identifiers such as email address and iPhone device ID will not be included on the Web site but will be retained by NLM . Further, the information may be disseminated to other agencies and institutions assisting the effort to locate missing people. Meanwhile, if you hear from the person you are concerned about, please follow instructions at the EHPL Web Site. Additionally you may also wish to use the Google Person Finder (http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake) or resources at the U.S. Department of State (http://www.state.gov).

2. The Main Menu

This is the main screen of the application. Four options are possible from here:

  1. 'Camera' - Create a record for a new person by taking a picture using your iPhone's camera. If a camera is not available on your device (i.e. iPod Touch), you will be prompted to choose a photo from your Photo Gallery.
  2. 'Album' - Create a record for a new person by selecting a photo already stored in your Camera Roll or Photo Gallery.
  3. 'View Database' - View a list of all existing records, see Figure 6. You can access the 'Filter DB' and 'Config App' screens through the options on the bottom tab bar (Figure 2b).

    Tapping on the "Found in Haiti" text on the Navigation Bar (Figure 2c) will return you to this screen. You can access our 'About' page be selecting the About icon on the Navigation Bar. You may create a new record by selecting the Add Button icon on the top-right corner. See details in Section 6 (View Record Database).

  4. The area with the logos (NLM, NIH, HHS) and text provides direct access to the 'About' page.

3. Edit Record Details

This screen is used to edit details about a record. You may scroll the page by swiping your finger up or down on the screen. 'Cancel' will take you back to the Main Menu without saving.

4. Review Record Details

This page shows the details of the person record as entered previously.

You can view a larger version of the photo by touching the thumbnail.

A 'Notes' field is provided for you to enter any additional notes or comments. To edit, please select the text box. This will bring up the 'Add Notes' page. You can then enter text using the keypad. To save, simply select the 'Back' button on the navigation bar.

You may also edit any of the fields by selecting the button on the top-right corner Edit. This will load the page in Figure 3.

If you would like to retake the photo, use another image, or simply remove the image entirely from this record, select the 'Delete Photo' button. You can then add another image by selecting the 'Attach Photo' button that appears when no image exists for the record.

To send this record to NLM's 'Earthquake in Haiti-People Locator' (EHPL) and/or to an email address of your choice, select the 'Email' button. This will generate a formatted email message, pre-configured to send to the EHPL Web site, as shown in Figure 5.

5. Email Record

An email message is pre-formatted with the record fields placed in the body of the email message. The photo is attached as a JPEG formatted image with the record's ID Tag set as its filename.

The "To recipient" address field is pre-populated with the EHPL email address, but you may add or remove email addresses from the To, Cc, and Bcc fields if necessary.

You may also edit the recipient list permanently by going to the 'Edit Email Recipients' page. See the discussion on 'Config' pages in Sections 8 and 9.

Select 'Send' to send the message. The email will be sent when a network connection is present, otherwise it will be saved in your email outbox and be sent the next time you open your Mail application.

6. View Record Database

This page shows a list of all records saved. You may create a new record by selecting the Add Button icon on the top-right corner.

You can access our 'About' page be selecting the About icon on the top-left corner. You may also filter the list of records displayed on this page by selecting the 'Filter DB' tab Filter DB. Additional options can be set through the 'Config App' tab Config App. See sections 7 and 8 for more information.

You can return to the Main Menu (Figure 2a) by touching 'Found in Haiti' on the top navigation bar of the screen.

7. Database Filtering

You can filter the list of records in the 'View Database' page using the controls here. To filter by date, first select a start and end date by touching each of the rows and selecting the date using the date picker that appears. When the date filter is On, only records created between the two dates will be displayed.

You may also search through the ID Tags of the records by turning On the Filter by ID option. You can change the search string by selecting the ID Filter row. Wildcards (*) can be used.

Please note that you cannot add any new records to the database while any filters are activated.

8. Configuration Settings

This screen permits editing configuration. Three options are possible from here:


  1. 'Email Edit' - Add or remove recipients that will be automatically added to the To, Cc, and Bcc fields when emailing records (Section 5) or the local database store (see below). See Section 10 for more information on this option.
  2. 'Database' - You have the option of sending all the photo records you have created on your device by email by selecting the 'Database' row. This will open an email message page with the local database added as an attachment.
  3. 'Photo Naming' - You can edit the formatting for the ID Tag assignments. See Section 9 for details.

Use this page to edit the ID Tag that is automatically assigned to each new record. The 'Code' field is used by EHPL. You have the option of selecting from three preset choices or typing in one yourself. Touching the date field will allow you to select a date to assign to the ID Tag. The field will be formatted automatically once a date is picked. The Number field is used to specify a starting number that will be incremented each time a new record is created.

Both Code and Date fields may be deactivated by the user; however, the Number field is required.

10. Email Recipient List

Touch the 'Edit' button on the top-right corner to add or delete emails. Touch the red (-) or green (+) symbols to delete and add emails, respectively. Then touch 'Done' to leave add/delete mode. Now you may edit each email by selecting its row. A new screen will appear allowing you to edit that email. Touch 'Save' to save your changes.

The emails on this page will be used as default recipients when sending each photo record by email.
