The documents below constitute a portion of the NHANES III documentation set. They present information about the NHANES III data that should be reviewed before proceeding with data interpretation and analysis.

Laboratory Data Document (500KB)

The NHANES III laboratory data contains data from the urine collection and venipuncture components of the examination, including almost all laboratory test results (blood and urine) available to date. In addition, auxiliary information such as how long the examinee fasted, the time of day of the venipuncture, and the conditions precluding venipuncture has been included. This document can also be viewed in sections.

Exam Data Document (3MB)

The NHANES III examination data contains data collected in the mobile examination center (MEC) as well as data collected during the home examination. In addition, data on total nutrient intakes, food sufficiency, intake of plain drinking water, and salt use are also included. This document can also be viewed in sections.

Adult Household Questionnaire Data Document (1.75MB)

The NHANES III Household Adult Questionnaire Data File contains all data collected during the household interviews for adults 17 years and older. Demographic data, survey design variables, and sampling weights for this age group are also included. This document can also be viewed in sections.

Youth Household Questionnaire Data Document (1MB)

The NHANES III Household Youth Questionnaire Data File contains all data collected during the household interviews for children and youths 2 months to 16 years of age. Demographic data, survey design variables, and sampling weights for this age group are also included. This document can also be viewed in sections.

Dietary Recall Data Documents

The Dietary Recall Data Files record the results of dietary interviews administered to all examinees by a trained dietary interviewer in the mobile examination center (MEC). Respondents reported all foods and beverages consumed except plain drinking water (i.e., not bottled) for the previous 24-hour time period (midnight to midnight). The three separate files are:
