Biomedical Image Transmission from Advanced Networks (BITA)

This project centers on the study of biomedical image transmission over advanced and extreme network infrastructures. It involves deploying and testing basic connectivity over Abilene, vBNS+, ATDnet, MAX and other Next Generation Internet and Internet2 advanced network implementations. Following connectivity testing, it involves conducting speed, error, and QOS performance data collection and analysis. Advanced network infrastructures include but are not limited to Packet-Over-Sonet, Wavelength Division Multiplexing, Optical switching, ATM and narrow and broadband wireless. Different techniques and protocols will be used in the examination including but not limited to FTP, multisocket, IP over ATM, native ATM, as well as client server systems such as CEB’s WebMIRS.

The project will employ Abilene and other research and education networks to evaluate image quality, usability, and speed performance for multiple image sources, including large image file transfers and videoconferencing, through formal demonstrations in collaboration with universities and research centers, domestically and internationally.

The project will gather information and best practices for the design of high-performance health networks based on connectivity through research and education networks (e.g. Abilene, ATDnet etc.). It will investigate scalability, reliability, latency, jitter, availability, cell-loss ratio, control strategies and other elements key to an optimum design. It will involve participation in task forces, advisory, and working groups focused on improving connectivity and information delivery for biomedical researchers nationally and internationally.
