In 1990, RFC 1190 was released specifying an experimental protocol named Internet Stream Protocol Version 2 (ST2.) ST2 was a connection-oriented protocol intended to allow reservation of bandwidth for real-time transport of multimedia data. ST2 was not a replacement for IPv4, but was supposed to work in conjunction with it. The protocol did not gain much appeal, and never came off the ground. However, this protocol specification used version 5 in its IP header. So, once the next version of IP was specified, it was not able to use version 5, but had to use version 6. What ever happened to IPv5? For a good explanation, see: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/3316 |
