Suggested Topics

Topics thought particularly pertinent to this meeting are listed below, and we hope to have speakers and participants with experience with a number of these.  Also, if you have URLs you found particular germane as background readings, or short personal position papers you’d like to share with the group, we can add those to the meeting web site.

·        Lossless video codecs (e.g., JPEG 2000 Lossless, MPEG4/AVC Lossless, new ones like ABO)

·        Candidate lossless file formats, such as -

            Motion JPEG 2000 (MJ2)
MJ2 embedded in AVI or other wrappers
Media eXchange Format (MXF) + JP2 frames (related to DCI)
            MXF + MJ2
            MPEG4/AVC
            MXF + MPEG4/AVC
            AAF?

·        Tools and equipment utilizing such formats, and their strengths and weaknesses.

·        Related aspects such as the role of color spaces and chroma subsampling, or audio representations and synchronization.

·        Metadata, in the context of specific file formats or for video archiving generally.  We’d like to hear about:

o       What metadata must be/could be/should not be saved for long-term preservation?

o       What metadata should be embedded within a media file as opposed to external?

o       Metadata embedment - existing format mechanisms and possible needed extensions.

o       The role of existing (or extended) video and still metadata schemes, e.g., various MPEG-7 profiles, MPEG-21, MIC, METS, NISO z39.87, Dublin Core, DMS-1, JPSearch, etc.

o       The degree to which encryption and other technical enforcers of intellectual property rights may be/should be/ought not be present.

Related experience with lossy formats can also be shared, when lessons learned are also applicable to the lossless case.
